Marie Sahba is an Norwegian-Iranian artist who make alternative pop with a hint of her Iranian roots. She writes, produces and releases her music on her own label «Sahba Records». Her debut-EP "Out of Control" was released November 15th 2019.
In January 2019 she released the song "Take Me Back» which was the first song she produced and released on her own label. It made it to the H&M international in-store playlists, New Music Friday and Norwegian radio etc. It was also featured in the critically acclaimed TV2 series "Heksejakt". She continued with with the strong follow-ups «Dancing Alone» and «Out of Control». «Out of Control», which is also the title track of the EP, is all about life and crisis.
– After losing many people dear to me, and with the on-going climate crisis, I felt like life was out of control and everything would go up in flames, says Marie Sahba.
A few years back she decided to leave her management and label and relaunch her project on her own terms and with full creative control. Therefore she started learning the ropes of production.
—2019 has been a huge learning experience. Finishing up the EP and releasing one song at a time on «Sahba Records» has been crazy. Even though it’s been stressful, it has also been such a wonderful journey. Especially since I’ve experienced not being independent and in charge of my own music and vision in the past. Ultimately, creative freedom, in every sense of the word, is what I’m striving for.
To finish it up she teamed up with her brother, Benjamin Sahba (best known as hardstyle DJ and producer «Refuzion»), and all the pieces fell into place.
— I love working with my brother. He’s honest and brings me back to earth. My productions tend to go a bit overboard so it helps with his critical eye and creative approach. We complete each other.
Marie Sahba has received great reviews from her past live performances and has proven herself to be a strong live artist. In 2017 Adressa wrote that Marie Sahba «is a wonderful force of nature» and that «the concert at Trondheim Calling was a powerful demonstration». She has also been nominated for by:Larm’s «role model»-prize, played at by:Larm, Pstereo, Rockefeller, Sentrum Scene, Øya warm-up at Parkteatret and guested P3-Ruben.
When she’s not creating and performing her music, she’s also a busy DJ in the Norwegian club scene.
—Actually, I just realized the other day that my DJ’ing has had a bigger influence on my music than what I originally thought. There’s definitely some club elements on the EP and mixed together with the Eastern sound and my background as a classically trained pianist, the EP feels like a whole and natural representation of me as an artist, songwriter and producer.
